Windows XP, released October 25, 2001,
brings together the Windows 9x/ME and Windows NT/2000 lines into a
single operating system. The XP stands for eXPerience, and represents
an improved user experience. A Home Edition, for consumers, and a
Professional Edition, for businesses, are available. They are both
based on the core Windows 2000 program code, but consist of a combination
of Windows 2000 and Windows ME features, as well as some of its own
new features and a new interface. A few of these features are enhanced
integration for music, video, imaging, and the Internet; built-in
support for CD-R and CD-RW drives; the ability to remotely control
the desktop from over a network or over the Internet; and improved
network management tools.31
