Microsoft introduced an entirely new version of Windows in 1996, designed for handheld PCs. The introduction of Windows CE 1.0 coincided with the release of handheld PCs by a few well-known companies. It is preloaded with Pocket Outlook, Pocket Word, and Pocket Excel, all scaled-back versions of the popular Microsoft Office programs, and comes with software to synchronize the handheld PC with a desktop PC. Windows CE 2.0 was available in 1997, and includes interface improvements, Pocket PowerPoint, support for color displays and external monitors, and a new PC synchronization program. Later, version 2.11 introduced Pocket Access, upgrades to the other Pocket applications including Pocket Internet Explorer, and support for more than 256 colors. Version 3.0 provides enhanced USB support (Universal Serial Bus, a standard for communication with hardware), improved Internet and communications features, support for more video devices, multimedia support, and upgraded system applications.8, 21, 30
